The next WWSR course will run in 2018 (date to be confirmed).  The Club typically runs this course once each year.

Suited to paddlers who are confident on grade 2 water and are comfortable with swimming in moving water, this course will develop personal survival skills and an understanding of rescue procedures in a river environment.

The course will include:

  • Safety principles for canoeists and kayakers
  • Safe paddling skills
  • Recovery of a swimmer
  • Using a throwline
  • Self rescues
  • Boat based rescues
  • Live bait rescues
  • Entrapment rescues
  • Recovery of equipment


  • Confident to paddle on grade 2 water
  • Confident swimming in normal canoe clothing suitable for a moving water environment
  • Minimum age of 16 years
  • Whilst a first aid certificate is not a pre-requisite, holding a current first aid certificate is strongly recommended for all paddlers

Cost: approx £140 (includes 2 nights' accommodation and breakfast, water access, use of Club equipment and coaching) plus BCU registration fee (£5/10 member/non-member) if you pass.

Venue: North Wales (Tryweryn or Dee)

Duration: 2 full days

Accommodation: 2 nights - The Vagabond, Betws-y-Coed (to be confirmed)
